The licence is not required if you are going to fish in the United Arab Emirates under the condition of turning to a specialized agency or a guide. If you want to arrange fishing independently, you must firstly obtain the UAE fishing licence.

How to obtain a fishing licence?

The UAE authorities keenly protect the country’s fish resources. That is why fishing is allowed only for the residents who have a special licence. Fishing without a licence is not permitted with a fine amounting from 27 to 136 USD (100-500 dirhams). All the Dubai waters are patrolled by the police in order to detect fishing violators. Besides, the authorities urged residents to inform them about the illegal fishing via hotline.

A licence is necessary only when fishing in the area within the city limits. Such a permit is not required when fishing outside the city.

The licence contributes to the reasonable use of natural resources and helps to protect fish stocks. Marine resources are of a great significance for the country, and their balance must be maintained. When issuing licenses, Dubai authorities want to know how many people will go fishing, and how it will affect fish stocks.

In Sharjah, Ajman, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah fishing licences are issued by the Municipality. In Abu Dhabi such permits are issued by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

The cost of getting a licence depends on the Emirate. In Dubai this procedure is provided free of charge, in Sharjah and Fujairah it costs 50 AED in Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman — 110 AED, and in Abu Dhabi — 120 AED.

The following documents must be submitted when applying for a fishing licence:

  • 1 photo;
  • copy of a foreign passport with a valid residence visa.

An important condition is that the licenses are issued only to adults, i.e. people over 18 years old. The process of issuing a fishing licence takes on average 3 days. The validity period is 1 year, with the possibility of further renewal. At the same time, tourists can obtain only a temporary permit with a validity period of 1 week.

After obtaining a license, please note that fishing is strictly prohibited within one kilometre of any military object as well as near the oil terminals and oil fields.
